How would you describe your blog niche?  Mocha Man Style is a men’s lifestyle site that covers fashion, entertainment, cars, travel, relationships, food/drink, and personal development.

Tell us about a typical work day as a blogger. What time do you stop/start your work day? I don’t have a typical work day. Each day is different. I usually start working around 9am. I’ll answer e-mails, schedule social posts, and make a list of things I need to do that day. In addition to my blog, I do marketing, social media, and podcast production for several companies. Throughout the day, I have to prioritize my duties to keep my clients happy and make sure my blog and social media channels are maintained. On certain days, I’ll schedule some time to meet with clients and pitch new clients. I also attend several networking events each week. Some nights I get home after 11pm.

How did you grow your blog’s traffic? What strategies worked best? Social media, e-mail marketing, media appearances (I do local and national TV and radio segments), and networking. I hand out my card to anyone who is willing to take it. The blog also got a boost when it was names Top 100 Men’s Blogs on the Planet and I was named one of the Top 25 Social Media Influencers in Houston.

How does your blog stand out among other male lifestyle & travel bloggers? How did you find your voice? My blog targets and older demographic of African-American men. The average age of my reader is 37. I try to produce content that is relevant to their lives. I will post about the latest in fashion and entertainment, but I will also cover serious topics such as depression, divorce, and the challenges of being a dad.

What has been your favorite brand partnership and why? My favorite brand partnership has been with Sea-Doo because it was a real partnership. We collaborated on content and they always pushed out my content on all of their channels.

What is your blog’s major traffic source?  What does that tell you about your audience? My blog’s major traffic sources are Google searches (most popular: how to make her fall in love with you again), E-mail, Flipboard, Twitter, and Facebook, in that order. I also get a lot of traffic from an article I wrote for the New York Times. I’m still trying to figure out what it says about my audience. I study the data everyday to find trends and correlations.

Do you write for or contribute to other publications? What’s your best advice for bloggers to book freelance gigs? I used to write for several publications, but I stopped a couple of years ago because I wanted to spend the time and effort creating content for my own site. If a publication offers a gig the right price, I would consider it. For bloggers who want to book freelance gigs, they should build up a body of work for editors to review. Showcase your talent and expertise. When you get the gig, but sure to deliver great work on time.

Frederick told us his future plans for MochaManStyle.com include creating more video content and launching a podcast with a partner.
