3 Tips to Launch a Successful Podcast

In case you missed it, we told you podcasting would be a powerhouse trend for influencer marketing in 2019. Although podcasting may seem like another task when you’re already blogging and traveling, keep in mind that it’s also a way to re-purpose your content, cross-promote your colleagues, interview experts and more. We asked two members of our influencer community who are pros at podcasting for their insight. Both recently interviewed our CEO Nadia Jones for their podcasts’.  (We will update the post and embed the podcast when they are live.) Here are their recommendations on how to launch a successful podcast.

Essentials for a Successful Podcast

Meet the podcasting pros in our influencer network.

Eileen Carter-Campos of Mommyteaches.com is a full-time educator, wife, and mom of two who lives in New York. Eileen is in Season 2 of her podcast.

Kaywanda Lamb, “The Winning Single Mom,” lives in Texas and coaches single moms on their new phase of life. Kaywanda has dozens of successful podcasts recorded and plans to officially launch later this month.

1. What’s your favorite app/site to create & distribute your podcast?

Eileen: “My favorite app and the one in which I began my podcast has been Anchor.Fm. Many had said that if you were looking to take your podcast to another level it wasn’t the place to distribute and host but now that they have sponsors many people are jumping on because they see they can earn money with every listen. I am proud to say I chose them because they are the easiest and NOT because of the money!”

Kaywanda: “My favorite app to create my podcast is Zoom.Us. You really can use the voice memo on your phone, but when interviewing others, Zoom makes it easy. The downside: Zoom exports audio in a format that is different from what Audacity wants. Audacity is a free audio editor that most pros swear by. So, I had to buy a converter to be able to edit. To distribute, I’m using Libsyn.”

Tip: Find an easy-to-use podcast platform to record and distribute your content.

2. What’s the best way to find a podcast topic or guest?

Eileen: “The best way to find a topic for me is by living. Going outside and seeing what is around me. My classroom, my parent situations that I may have or that I come encounter with. I find when we stay on social and let our minds be tainted by publicity and celebrities we don’t fully live. I live day to day and want to share topics that people can relate to. Celebrities already have too much publicity so I try and stay away from those topics unless I have a burning opinion. The guests I have found so far are the friends that I have made on or off social that I find very interesting. It’s those people who might not have a ton of followers or that people might not shed light on or even share their content. They have a voice which is the reason why I choose them. I am tired of hearing/seeing the same people get chosen. I want that fresh eye, perspective, and as we say in Brooklyn, “the underdog” who has a voice and is willing to be authentic about it all.
Because I am also a writer, I love to review books and share that author’s process and dig deep into their thoughts. I want to know what is going on and see what advice they can offer to those upcoming writers, especially for us diverse authors who need to share their stories more.
Kaywanda: “I’m a creative and my thinking juices are always flowing. So far, I’ve hand-selected my guests. But, I would say let life inspire you. Listen to other experts in your industry and see what’s trending and what’s missing. Then, ask yourself what your audience wants and needs. They are always telling us. We have to listen.”

Tip: Use your real-life experience and trusted circle to find podcast ideas or guests.

3. What would you say to someone who thinks they don’t have time to create a successful podcast?

Eileen: “I heard something recently in a book I believe that went like this– if you have time to have an affair, you have time to do anything. We always make excuses I believe. I feel when we are passionate about something we have to make time. It’s how you prioritize your day. I make time just like I make time for my marriage, my children, myself, my classroom and my profession. I make time for podcasting because it’s fun for me and I enjoy it. Once it isn’t fun and I don’t enjoy it I won’t make time for it any longer. That’s how I roll. I can drop something that I am not feeling just like that. I say, think about what you want to talk about, make talking points, be authentic, don’t get into it thinking anyone is listening and you’re going to make money and just press play! Don’t listen to others and don’t overthink it and be too technical, just do it!

Kaywanda: Time is not a problem. Having a plan and organizing your life is. I knew I wanted to have a successful podcast that helps single moms in business. I also knew what I had on my plate. So, I began interviewing guests months ahead here and there prepping. I also have an amazing virtual COO Sha Cannon who helps me stay organized and on a project. Make a plan, start small, create name, description, and think of dream guests and what you’ll discuss. Then, start. You’ll learn along the way. Pat Flynn of Smart Passive Income and Nikaila Matthews Okome of Side Hustle Pro have info on how to start a podcast. Research, research, research, and take action.

Tip: Prioritize organizing your podcast ideas and eliminate excuses to launch!
