Pinterest launched in 2010. Fast forward 10 years and the Pinterest platform known for its storyboard features has more than 300 million active monthly users. The company revealed more than half of those users live outside the U.S. Like all social media platforms, Pinterest is constantly changing what appears in its feed to provide a more enjoyable experience for users. It should be no surprise that Pinterest wants to prioritize fresh new content vs. older popular content.
As a content creator, Pinterest is your go-to place to add engaging imagery designed to provide traffic to your blog. If you answer these key questions for users on Pinterest, you’ll see an increase in views, clicks, and sales:
- What should I wear?
- What should I cook?
- What should I make/create?
To help you become even better at showcasing how well you answer those questions, here are some of the 2020 Pinterest updates you need to know to be successful on the platform.
2020 Pinterest Updates
Fresh Images for Pins
Pinterest would like to see new, fresh images. Older popular pins will see lower engagement on Pinterest.
You’re encouraged to create fresh pins, layouts and photos. Rely on design tools like Canva, PicMonkey, or Adobe Illustrator.
For Tailwind app users who schedule re-shares of their pins, creating fresh pins is also important. Tailwind’s best practices guide recommends:
“As a guideline, we’ve found that our most successful members Pin around 15-25 Pins per day, so this is a good range to aim towards. SmartGuide is meant to help you stick to healthy practices that will maximize your success on Pinterest and avoid risky behavior that could end up holding you back.”
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by such a daunting task of creating fresh pins, hire a virtual assistant to create the images and re-share them to your optimized Pinterest boards.
Designers on Fiverr will create pins or groups of pins starting at $5.
Pinterest Image Size
For bloggers, pins are like billboards. You want them to be on-brand, visible, and have a call to action.
Pinterest templates like those provided by Canva, recommend pins that are 1000 x 1500 pixels.
You can still switch things up and vary your pin size. But Canva and similar partners are the first to know what Pinterest wants for optimum content.

Story Pins
Instagram stories aren’t the only popular way to share stories. They’re images with text you can swipe to continue watching.
Pinterest stories will appear in your home feed on Pinterest: “A Story Pin gives you all the information you need to make a recipe or craft, so you can tap into it from the home feed to swipe through to get creative.”
Story pins aren’t available to all Pinterest users – yet. As of May 2020, story pins are available on IOS for Android users.

Pinterest Hashtags
While you may be more familiar with hashtags on Twitter and Instagram, Pinterest recommends that you use hashtags too.
“Use words or phrases that describe the content in the Pin – we recommend you add no more than 20 hashtags per Pin. It’s best to be objective and use hashtags that make sense and are relevant to the Pin.”

PINTEREST ACADEMY
Because it recognizes the amazing role creators play, Pinterest launched a free e-academy in April 2020.
“Pinterest Academy is a series of fun, smart online courses you can access from anywhere on any device. Go through them at your own pace, learning how to connect with your audience on Pinterest. You’ll get information on how to design Pins, inspire visual discovery and incorporate Pinterest best practices.”
